The little Tree Farm

Trevor went to an auction today and he came home with  206 trees and 80 fern plants. Yup, that's a lot of plants. We aren't going to use all of them, and some we just aren't ready for yet. So I am selling some of them and was gonna give a little info about each plant. This actually kind of excites me because I used to work at 2 different Nurseries and loved those 2 jobs. I had to do a little fact checking to revive my memory.

All these plants are in great shape and very healthy. They came from a tree farm up north and have quite hard soil in the pots, so just have some good soil to plant around it in the hole you put it in.

The first one is Northern Gold Forsythia. It is not a compact bush, it is a little more spread out, but is a shorter bush, kinda a mini tree form. But is gives you beautiful spring colour. It is zone 3a so it might just need a little protection from our harsh winter, but nothing to work intensive, just plant it in a more sheltered spot.

Cotoneaster. A great hedge plant, they do sucker which makes them a great hedge plant, just mow beside them to keep suckers at bay. Hardy and a beautiful dark green leaf. Berries that birds like to eat. They like mostly sun to full sun. Great fall color of an orangey-yellow color.

Compact Cranberry. Now I am not 100% sure of which kind of cranberry this is, it could be 1 of 2. Either the Bailey or the High bush, I think these are Bailey. Both are beautiful and both do well in this climate, the european just has a bit more dark green and red to it. Both only get to about 5-6 feet tall. Beautiful red fall color.

Burning Bush. this is probably one of my most favourite bush. It has such intense red fall colour. This is a very unique "leafed" shrub as it is not really leaves but almost fat quill like leaves. DOes well in this climate and likes a lot of sun.

Buffalo Juniper. A great ground cover. Spreads really well and likes sun.

Native ferns. Again I believe these are the ones we have. They just like shade and moist and fairly well drained soil.

Ferns

Ostrich fern — Matteuccia struthiopteris

  • Image of an ostrich fern.
    The inset shows the
    fiddleheads in spring.
Native to: NT, BC, SK to NL.
  • Habitat: Grows in moist woods and thickets, and prefers partial to full shade but can handle sunnier spots.
  • Appearance: 70–120 cm. Leaves are widest at middle, and once–divided, with leaflets that gradually narrow toward the base of the leaf. Leaflets have lobes that could be considered sub-leaflets. Has separate fertile leaf. Stalks are deeply grooved in front. Spreads quickly.

So those are what we have to sell so far. We want to do more planting and as we find we don't need some more plants we will be selling some more off.

Most of the info I used was from  Dunvegan Greenhouse, I used to work there in Grande Prairie Alberta, if they can grow it there we can grow it here.
